Goals and Purpose: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of Catholic lay men and women founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam in Paris, France. The Society’s organizational structure and mission where shaped by its founder and guided by the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul, Father of the Poor and Apostle of Charity. The patroness of the Society is Mary, the Mother of God, particularly under her title of the Immaculate Conception. The Society seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity, to help all who are suffering. Key to the Society’s active ministry is the person-to-person involvement of its member volunteers because they see the face of Jesus Christ in the needy persons whom they serve.
Responsibilities: As a reflection of the whole Family of God, members who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group and economic level. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule.
Helpful Attributes: Need to be non-judgmental and enjoy serving God’s less fortunate.
Time Commitment: As much as one wants to be involved. Several positions one can help in.
Training Required: Partnered with an experienced Vincentian for initial training
Meeting Schedule: 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7pm at area churches. The McHenry conference is made up of St. Patrick Church, Church of Holy Apostles, St. Mary Church Mchenry and St. John the Baptist Johnsburg.
